Lipstick has been the most popular makeup product for decades, and for good reason. However, not everyone knows how to play around with this wand. It is an art that requires precision, technique and practice. This is the first and most important step and I can’t stress this enough – preparation is key! You don’t want to walk around with dry, chapped lips. Exfoliate with a soft, damp toothbrush and moisturize by applying a nourishing lip balm to keep lips soft, supple and healthy-looking. You can then apply a lip primer to make the color last longer and prevent feathering. An alternative exfoliation method is to use a sugar scrub.
If you’re concerned about any type of discoloration or uneven lip tone, it’s important that your lipstick has a base to hold onto. This is to ensure that the lipstick does not penetrate the lips. Choose a concealer shade that matches your lip color and dab it on a little using a flat brush or a small fluffy brush. Apply some compacting compound over the top to seal the base. It also helps your lip color last longer.
To define your natural lip line and prevent your lipstick from getting dirty, use a good lip liner to define, reshape and perfect the lip contours. This way you will achieve a more defined, precise and polished look.
Line your natural lip line from corner to corner with a liner that matches your skin tone to prevent feathering (this sometimes depends on coordination with the lipstick you plan to wear). To highlight the Cupid’s bow, draw an “X” on your upper lip just below the Cupid’s bow.
Don’t worry if the lines on the inside are a little imperfect because the lipstick will cover them up anyway – but it’s the outside lines that are important.

Once you’ve completed all the steps above and chosen your lipstick, take some product on a lip brush and apply it evenly to your lips. Don’t miss the inner corners. Be sure to apply it to the corners of your lined lips. Work in layer by layer and intensify the color as desired. Usually a good coat of good quality lipstick is enough.
Note: If you have dry lips, you may not want to use matte lipsticks as they tend to dry out your lips even more. Look for moisturizing lipsticks that also nourish your lips.
If your lips are on the thin side, avoid using very dark colors as they tend to make your lips appear smaller.
Use some concealer blush and work the edges to correct the shape of your lips. This is optional, but if you want to give your lips a pouty look, you can add a subtle touch of lip gloss.

If you have dark, pigmented, or discolored lips, you can still improve your lip color with a few simple tricks. Don’t be afraid of bright colors or pure pink because these tricks work if you just put in a little effort.
The key is to neutralize pigmented lips with a concealer that exactly matches your skin tone. Where there is darkness, there is always concealer, so it’s not uncommon to use one on your lips. You will be amazed at the difference it makes.
If a little concealer doesn’t help much, you can dab a little more product on your lips until you get the desired effect.
Use a lip liner that matches the lipstick color and carefully trace your natural lip line. When doing this, make a cross or “X” just below the Cupid’s bow to highlight the shape of your lips.
Apply your lipstick in multiple layers if necessary. For better results, use a non-shiny formula. Plus, they last much longer than creamy or glossy lipsticks.
